Amsterdam is not just a destination; it is an experience waiting to be embraced. Whether you are interested in the city’s rich history, thriving arts scene, delectable cuisine, or simply the joy of leisurely biking alongside serene canals, there is something here for every traveller. So, let us start exploring!
Day 1
I walked a few minutes after reaching the central station and reached my hostel. ( I had come on a bus- Flixbus is an excellent option as it is economical and has great connectivity), I had the unique opportunity to visit the Red Light Museum in Amsterdam. This experience left me both intrigued and enlightened. As I wandered through the narrow streets of Amsterdam’s historic De Wallen district, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of curiosity and respect for the city’s open-minded approach to one of the world’s most notorious professions.
The museum, nestled amidst the vibrant tapestry of Amsterdam’s diverse culture, offers visitors a chance to better understand the centuries-old profession that has played a significant role in the city’s history. From the moment I entered, I was struck by the tasteful and respectful presentation of the exhibits.
The museum delves into the stories of the women who have worked in the red-light district, sharing their perspectives, challenges, and the evolution of their profession over time. It humanizes an industry often shrouded in secrecy, allowing visitors to appreciate the resilience and autonomy of the individuals who choose this profession.
One of the most enlightening aspects of the museum was its emphasis on destigmatization and safety. It was heartening to see the efforts made to ensure the well-being of the workers in the district and the steps taken to address the broader issues surrounding the profession.
Moreover, the museum shed light on the role of Amsterdam’s red-light district as a cultural and historical phenomenon, underscoring its significance as a symbol of the city’s progressive values and tolerance.
Walking through the museum, I couldn’t help but reflect on the complexities of human sexuality, societal attitudes, and the importance of respecting individual choices. It was an eye-opening experience that challenged my preconceived notions and sparked meaningful conversations with fellow visitors.
After a few hours inside the museum, I realized I hadn’t eaten anything and wanted to grab something quickly. I stopped by a pizza joint and got myself a massive slice of pizza for two euros. After quickly gobbling my pizza, I started walking towards the Rijksmuseum. I stopped by one of the beautiful canals. I decided to spend time by the water. I booked a canal cruise to explore the beauty of Amsterdam’s history.
It was 9 p.m., and I had to return to my hostel. So I skipped dinner and grabbed some Stroopwafels from the nearest Spar store. It was a long day, and I only wanted to sleep.
Day 02
I started my day with the leftover Stroopwafels and a Heineken beer. I had a walking tour aligned, and Micheal, the tour guide, offered some great insights about the place and suggested some good places to dine at. Afterwards, I stopped by a small gelato store and got a coconut-flavoured gelato.
I walked through the city’s local streets and past Anne Frank’s house. Since I had no plans, I decided to spend some time in Vondelpark.
As you enter the park, you’ll be greeted by meandering paths that wind through a stunning array of flora, from well-manicured gardens to tranquil ponds where swans gracefully glide. In the warmer months, the park comes alive with the vibrant colours of blooming flowers, and it’s not uncommon to stumble upon impromptu picnics or open-air concerts.
One of the park’s most iconic features is the Joost van den Vondel statue, a tribute to the literary legacy that inspired its name. This statue stands as a symbol of the park’s enduring connection to Amsterdam’s cultural heritage.
Whether you’re seeking a peaceful moment of reflection, a leisurely day in the sun, or a taste of Amsterdam’s vibrant cultural scene, Vondelpark has something for everyone. It’s a place where the city’s pulse slows down, allowing you to reconnect with nature and soak up the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most enchanting cities.
It was getting late, and I had a dinner reservation at vegan junk food bar. It was mindblowing. Bursting with flavour and creativity, these burgers redefine indulgence, with options like the “Notorious Sumo Burger” that stack savoury vegan patties, crunchy onion rings, and a symphony of delectable toppings, delivering an unforgettable taste explosion in every bite. It’s a guilt-free, cruelty-free delight that leaves you craving more.
I started walking back to my dorm and stopped by Archie’s Cafe for a cup of piping hot chocolate. Paris got me addicted to it.
Day 03
It was my last day in Amsterdam, and my sister visited me. She lives in Eindhoven and planned a trip to Amsterdam to spend a day with me. We also designed a one-day getaway to one of the nearby villages- Giethoorn. (There is more about Giethoorn and other places that I will cover in the next blog.) I started my day with a decaf and visited the Van Gogh Museum to admire the famous artist’s masterpieces. One of the locals I interacted with suggested I have a Dutch Pancake. I met my sister that afternoon at the central station as we boarded the train for a day trip to Zaanse Schans. Zaanse Schans is a charming open-air museum just outside Amsterdam, offering a captivating glimpse into Dutch heritage. This historical village is renowned for its well-preserved windmills, clog workshops and picturesque canals. Visitors can watch traditional artisans at work, sample Dutch cheeses, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets lined with historic wooden houses. After a day out with my sister, we returned to Amsterdam to spend a night together exploring this beautiful city. We had dinner at Maoz. Their signature item, the Falafel Sandwich, is a masterpiece of crispy chickpea goodness, bursting with flavour. With an emphasis on fresh, organic ingredients, Moaz Vegan’s menu caters to vegans and non-vegans alike. Whether in Amsterdam or another lucky city with a Moaz Vegan location, prepare to embark on a delightful culinary journey.
Belly full of food and laughter and rekindling childhood days with my sister, we returned to the dorm as we had an early start to Giethoorn the next day.
Here’s my Amsterdam to-do list.
